Community-Engaged Course-Based Undergraduate Research of Multidrug Resistance in Escherichia coli in Water Near Dairy and Hog Farms in Michigan
Published in Environmental Microbiology Reports, 2025
This study assesses multidrug resistance in E. coli from surface waters downstream of dairy and swine CAFOs in Michigan, finding MDR in up to 76% of isolates at livestock-impacted sites but absent at the unimpacted control. I contributed to field sampling, disk diffusion analysis, IDEXX analysis, and manuscript preparation.
How does human subjectivity affect the reliability of single-cell RNA-seq cell-type annotation?
Under review at Cell Systems
This study examines how analyst subjectivity affects scRNA-seq cell-type annotation, finding substantial variability across 37 participants and a 58% higher false positive rate when analysts expected specific rare cell types. I contributed statistical analysis of parameter tuning effects, characterization of analyst background influences on accuracy, and data preprocessing; under review at Cell Systems.
High levels of multi-drug resistance observed in Escherichia coli in Tijuana River Estuary and recreational beaches in southern San Diego County
Under review at Letters in Applied Microbiology
This study assesses antimicrobial and multidrug resistance in E. coli from the Tijuana River Estuary and San Diego recreational beaches, finding up to 60% multidrug resistance at sewage-impacted sites versus 3% at a reference beach, and showing that ESBL-EC, the WHO’s proposed proxy for environmental AMR, poorly predicted multidrug-resistance burden (R² = 0.19). I contributed to data curation, disk diffusion analysis, and IDEXX analysis.
Elevated antibiotic resistance and multidrug resistance in Escherichia coli from surface waters near dairies and a calf ranch in Wisconsin: implications for hotspot screening, culture- and DNA-based analyses, and seasonality
Under review at Journal of Hazardous Materials
This study assesses antibiotic resistance and multidrug resistance in E. coli from surface waters near Wisconsin dairies and a calf ranch, finding up to 70% of isolates multidrug-resistant at CAFO-impacted sites versus 4% at unimpaired controls, with a modified IDEXX screening tool successfully flagging an ESBL-producing E. coli hotspot downstream of the calf ranch. I contributed to field sampling, data curation, disk diffusion analysis, and IDEXX analysis.
