Elevated antibiotic resistance and multidrug resistance in Escherichia coli from surface waters near dairies and a calf ranch in Wisconsin: implications for hotspot screening, culture- and DNA-based analyses, and seasonality

This study assesses antibiotic resistance and multidrug resistance in E. coli from surface waters near Wisconsin dairies and a calf ranch, finding up to 70% of isolates multidrug-resistant at CAFO-impacted sites versus 4% at unimpaired controls, with a modified IDEXX screening tool successfully flagging an ESBL-producing E. coli hotspot downstream of the calf ranch. I contributed to field sampling, data curation, disk diffusion analysis, and IDEXX analysis.
